Making Transitions Happen Platform (MTH)

Engaging companies, communities and citizens for the development of a low-carbon society.

Platform Overview

One of Climate-KIC's key aims is to encourage a broad and practical model of innovation, where social aspects are considered alongside technical advances.

We identify approaches that can be embedded into the mainstrema as soon as possible. There is an emphasis on the non-technical aspects that are crucial for a shift to a low carbon society.

In order to do that, Climate-KIC partners meet and collaborate in the Making Transitions Happen group, one of a number of specialist groups that bring together stakeholders from science, public policy, the third sector and business in key climate innovation areas.

Through careful analysis of European cities, six strands have been identified where wider changes need to be encouraged. These will be applied to four areas, in which the international community agree the majority of carbon-emission reductions must occur.

Key Ambitions

Making Transitions Happen identifies approaches that can be embedded into the mainstream, today.

There are hundreds of low carbon initiatives that take place across Europe. Climate-KIC intends to deepen, broaden and scale-up current initiatives across towns, cities and regions.

The unique approach of the experts in the Making Transitions Happan group calls for a focus on the non-technical barriers to success, whether they are social, institutional, financial, behavioural or regulatory.

The group works with Climate-KIC's education specialists to develop the understanding of transitional thinking and practice. Through identifying key projects, it encourage knowledge transfer through programmes such as Climate-KIC's professional placement programme, Pioneers into Practice.

There is a significant focus on entrepreneurship. Individuals and organisations are encouraged and supported to grow ideas into new products, processes and services.#

The Platform Approach

Experts in the Making Transitions Happen group look for ways to encourage innovation from a range of sources; not just universities and large organisations, but from entrepreneurs, communties, the third sector and small enterprises.

Making Transitions Happen is centred on developing practical demonstrations to be applied in multiple contexts across Europe.

It expects pilot projects to be able to demonstrate the ability to be replicable in three or more regions across Europe.

Climate-KIC provides the support to develop the links required to expand and projects, and create the largest possible impact across Europe.
